NAVIGATING PEDAGOGY

Our Navigating Pedagogy conference is suitable for all K-12 teachers at Proficient level.  The conference will be presented during the at-sea days of the cruise, allowing plenty of time for you to enjoy the ports and the entertainment on board.  The session topics and learning outcomes are shown below.  Click on a title to reveal more detail about each topic:

Putting the Brain in Gear

Establishing a positive environment to prepare students for learning

NESA Standard Descriptors 3.2.2, 3.3.2, 4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.3.2

Duration: 2 x 2-hour sessions

Focus: How do we prepare our brains and our students’ brains to be ready to learn?

Ideologies:
Marc Brackett (Yale) – Emotional Intelligence
Stuart Shanker (The MEHRIT Centre) – Self Regulation
Carol Dwerk (Harvard) – Growth Mindset
James Nottingham – The Learning Pit

This session will be about understanding where students are at when they enter the classroom in terms of emotions and stress levels. The presentation will include some time for discussion about the various signs of emotional stress students exhibit and strategies for dealing with them. It will also involve how we can check our own stress levels and through monitoring them, manage them better. Once teachers’ stress levels are lower they are better equipped for helping students to manage their own. The second half of this session will focus on participants applying the theoretical content and concepts to their own lessons and programs so they will be ready to implement what they have learned into practice.

Teaching with Purpose

Setting Expectations

NESA Standard Descriptors 3.1.2, 3.2.2, 3.3.2

Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey – The Purposeful Classroom
John Hattie, Robert Marzano and others – Learning Intentions/Goals/Objectives
Kalantzis and Cope – Charter of Change

This session will present a highly structured approach to programming curriculum and planning lessons to make the learning process transparent for all involved in the process. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that when students know the intention and context of their learning they achieve at a higher level. Half of the time will be dedicated to programming and planning Learning Intentions and Success Criteria for teachers’ own lessons.

Teaching for Deeper Thinking

How do we encourage students to engage in deeper thinking processes?

NESA Standard Descriptors 3.1.2, 3.2.2, 3.3.2, 3.4.2

This session will present the philosophy and resources of Harvard’s Cultures of Thinking and other specific strategies that encourage students to think deeper as part of the learning process. There will be considerable time dedicated to implementing these strategies into teachers’ own lessons.
